Neighborhood Clean-Up in May

There was a Neighborhood Clean Up on May 21st from 9am to 12noon, held in the parking lot of Grant Park Church, located at 2728 NE 34th Avenue. The cost was $5 per auto and $10 per pick-up and was intended as a service to people in the neighborhood. Drop boxes were available for bulky waste, yard debris, scrap metal, building materials, computers & cell phones, and donations of usable items. There was also a “swap” area.

The Clean Up was a great success. We had 65 people take advantage of the event with some people returning multiple times. Yard debris filled two dumpsters while general waste filled another two. We were able to recycle scrap metal and computer parts. Everyone made an effort to recycle as much as possible. Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped – you know who you are!

The donations we received totaled $650. Thanks to Metro and City of Portland Bureau of Sustainable Development for financial support. Thanks also to the Grant Park Baptist Church, Real Estate Firm and Family Medical Group for use of the parking lot.

This is the first time in more than 10 years that Grant Park has held a clean up. We hope to do this again next spring – preferably earlier in May. A lot of planning went into this year’s clean-up because it was our first in many years. Hopefully we can reap the benefits of that planning for many years to come.
The whole event was sponsored by several different organizations: the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods is the umbrella organization assisting the neighborhood associations and distributing grant money; METRO is granting waivers on the dumping fees; and the Office of Sustainable Development has contributed money to assist with hauling fees and related expenses. We would also like to thank the Grant Park Church, Family Medical Group and The Real Estate Firm who have permitted us to stage this event in their parking lot.
